Origin: Native to North America sunflower was first domesticated in Mesoamerica, present day Mexico, by at least 2600 BC.
Growth Habit: from seed, annual erect broad leafed plant with strong tap root and prolific lateral spread of surface roots
Flower: usually single head ( the head is not a single flower but made up of one to two thousand individual flowers joined by a common receptacle : yellow, orange red, brown and cream.
Blooming Period: available as import year round, Vancouver local June thru October
Leaf: deltoid, triangular, broad coarsely toothed, rough. Leaves follow (phototropic) the sun (not the flowers)
Excellent for focal point in design. Large heads require extra support, armature, or mechanics.
